Georgian Gentleman’s Sovereign Purse

The clasp of foliate cut steel and inscribed GEORGE RUSHOUT. The beadwork pouch depicts to the one side a huntsman and his dog and to the reverse his quarry, a stag. All over a floral design. The gold bead pompoms, one to each side and one on the bottom. All in good order.

George Rushout was born July 1772, the son of John Rushout, 1st Baron Northwick and his wife, Rebecca, nee Bowles, and lived at Northwick Park, Nr. Blockley, Glos. George married Lady Caroline Stewart,, daughter of John Stewart, 7th Earl of Galloway in 1803, having moved to a Bowles family property, Burford House, Nr. Tenbury Wells. Becoming Rector of Burford in 1798, he changed his name by royal licence in 1817 to Rushout-Bowles. His son, George, became 3rd Baron Northwick in 1859.
