Regency Mahogany Sofa

Mahogany framed back with carved reeded detail, as are the sides and front rails. The arms terminate with carved sunbursts. The back legs are swept, as is the back, which is removable with two thumb-screw bolts. The front legs are turned and fluted and stand on brass cups and castors. This sofa is similar in design to one supplied to Napoleon in St Helena, drawings of which appear in George Bullock Cabinetmaker by Blairman’s, Pub’d by Murray. The design is after Richard Brown who published The Rudiment of Drawing Cabinet and Upholstery, 2nd Edition, pub’d in 1822. The book, with 25 plates, includes one for this sofa design with accompanying explanatory notes.
