Concertina Book ‘The Principal Cities of the World’
Printed engraved images from the major North American cities, Berlin, London, Dresden, Vienna, Paris, Switzerland and Italy. Front paste down features full size picture of the Liberty Statue with the title ‘The Great Bartholdi Statue, Liberty Enlightening the World. The Gift of France to the American People. To be erected in Bedloes Island, New York Harbour.’ The base of the statue in the picture identifies that it was created before the New York committee commissioned Richard Morris Hunt to design a pedestal in 1881. Fair condition. Oxblood paper covered card boards, both with light rubbing and bruising, with black cloth spine. Gilt title to front board along with a floral decoration featuring birds and fan. Front paste down now separated from the remainder of the concertina but all pages present and otherwise intact.
