Full account of the life of the controversial Clive of India (1725 - 1774), charting his early years, through his military service and as Commander in Chief of British India. George Robert Gleig (1796 - 1888) was a Scottish soldier who served with Wellington’s forces, a military writer and priest.

12mo 7.25” x 5.25”. 366pp. Full scarlet calf bound with marbled endpapers. Gilt rulers and rosettes to both boards, each with gilt edges. All page edges gilt and five raised bands and gilt tooled decoration and title to spine. Gilt seal of Dover College to front board. Inner board edges embossed. Book plate inside top board dated January 1910 and awarded to Francis Henry Smyth as Junior School Prize.

Condition: Very fine with pages pristine and spine very tight. Very slight fading to spine and top right front board corner slightly bent. Boards showing only the slightest marks. Plate of Lord Clive by Nathaniel Dance RA to the frontispiece intact and in excellent condition. A superior copy.
