17th century South Yorkshire oak backstool, the two scroll carved arched back each with turned acorn drops, to panelled seat over turned and railed under-frame. By repute, the carved centre of the back rail covertly represents the head of Charles 1, and the acorn the oak tree in which he hid after the battle of Worcester. These emblems showed the owner’s support for the Crown and the Royalist Cause.  English, circa 1660 - 1680
