Containing a fascinating insight into the self-made man and instruction to others on the important elements of becoming successful. With chapters on various subjects including Leaders in Industry - Inventors and Producers, Application and Perseverance, Workers in Art, Energy and Courage, Industry and the Peerage and Money - Its Use and Abuse. Samuel Smiles (1812 - 1904) was a Scottish author and government reformer who claimed that progress would come from a new attitude rather than new laws. This book raised Smiles to celebrity status almost overnight, promoting thrift and attacking materialism.

12mo - 4.75” x 7”. 415pp. Half bound in tan calf with embossed scarlet paper boards. Marbled endpapers and page edges and five raised bands and gilt decoration and title to spine. Inscribed in ink to front free endpaper Henry Turner, March 1867. Silk ribbon intact.

Condition: Good+, showing old ink spill to upper outside corner, marking both board corners and a block of pages to front and back. Spine very tight although front hinge split between title page and preface, but sound. Boards strong and clean although showing scuffing to spine head and a little rubbing to leading edges and corners.
