Newspapers, fresh off the press, could leave a residue of ink, causing the reader to get ink on his hands or clothes, thus the air pump, or clug, was invented. Warm air would be taken into the pump from the open fire and then expelled across the newsprint to dry it out; a morning task for the butler, one assumes?
This example would appear to date from the early 19th century.
