'Memento mori' racehorse inkwell. Fine, bell metal mounted horse’s hoof in the form of an inkwell with hinged lid, inscribed ‘SWEETS by Butterscotch by Kendal’ RIP 1912. ‘Kendal’ was sired by one of the Duke of Westminster’s great chestnut stallions and Derby winner ‘Bend Or’ and was born in 1883 in the Duke’s Eaton Stud. ‘Butterscotch’, born in 1889, was out of ‘Kendal’ and the mare ‘Sweetness’.
